Super Eagles of Nigeria stars Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers miss the opportunity to win their first trophy of the campaign after their club KRC Genk suffered a 3-2 defeat against Club Brugge FC in the Belgian Super Cup at Jan Breydel Stadion.
Onuachu led the attack for Coach Van den Brom’s side, but failed to register a goal in the encounter.
The 2020-2021 top scorer was later replaced by his compatriot Cyriel Dessers in the beginning of the second half.
Theo Bongonda opened scoring for KRC Genk in the 44th minutes through a fine teamwork from Bryan Heynen, before Matej Mitrovic equalized for Club Brugge in the 45th minutes.
Noa Lang put Club Brugge ahead from penalty spot in the 48th minutes, before Clinton Mata made it 3-1 in the 50th minutes.
Jere Uronen reduced the deficit for Genk in the 90th minutes but they couldn’t find the all important equaliser before the final whistle.
Meanwhile David Okereke and Stephen Odey were not listed by Club Brugge and Genk for the match.
The 3-2 victory over KRC Genk means Club Brugge FC have won the Belgium Super Cup.
