Following the panic over the ultimatum given by the federal government for the integration of Subscriber Identification Modules (MIM) with valid National Identity Numbers (NIN), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed its position.

Punch reports that the commission said on Wednesday, January 13, that it was awaiting the advice of the federal government to take the final decision.

Legit.ng gathered that it also stated that the earlier announced deadlines were still in force despite the clamour for extension or outright suspension of the registration process.

The report stated that calls for deadline extension were mainly due to the large crowds that gather daily at the various offices of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

In a chat with the newspaper in Abuja, the nation’s capital, the director, public affairs, NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde, said that no deadline extension had been approved.

He said:

“Right now, apart from the recent information that we made concerning the extension, no further update yet.

“The information on this matter was the one that talked about when we moved the extension to January 19 for those who have NINs and February 9 for those who do not have.”

He said he is in support of extending the exercise for Nigerians to be able to register.

The federal government had given six week-extension for subscribers without NIN from December 30, 2020, to February 9, 2021.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported the federal government justified the ultimatum it issued to Nigerians mandating them to link their SIM cards to the NIN or risk disconnection.

It was reported that Isa Pantami, the minister of communication and digital economy stated that the government gave everyone about 12 months to complete the exercise.
