The Presidency has come under fire after maintaining its position in support of embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami.

The Nation reports the presidency had conceded the views expressed by Pantami endorsing some terrorist groups in the past were unacceptable.

Appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Garba Shehu had compared the case of Pantami with that of former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who resigned over allegation of forgery.

Shehu, a spokesman for the President, stated that the Presidency would have acted differently if the Minister had committed forgery.

“If Pantami had forged a certificate to come into office, the attitude (of the Presidency) would have been different,” he said.

The presidential spokesman added: “In the second case which is that of Pantami, you are probing the thoughts and this what Americans have called ‘McCarthyism’.

Unlike in the case of Adeosun, the Presidency declared support for Pantami, saying he was being subjected to a “cancel campaign” instigated by those who seek his removal.

But displeased Nigerians alleged the Presidency seems to be indirectly supporting terrorism.

They took to social media to express displeasure, saying since Adeosun was haunted because of her past, then Pantami’s case should be treated as such.

Adenekan Mayowa said: “According to Garba Shehu, it’s about forgiving people’s past mistakes & crimes, Kidnapper Evans has been in the prison & has on national TV shown remorse for his past deeds, Pls When is Buhari releasing him? Just as pantanmi, Evans has changed too.”

Tope Femi wrote: “@GarShehu so you could prefer terrorist comment than a forged certificate? Both are bad, both are supposed to face justice. With intelligent view terrorist is evil and more dangerous than forgery. But are unacceptable.”

Tifase Oladayo posited that “This government kept on setting new erroneous standard day in day out with no principle guiding decision making.

“One rule for the likes of Kemi Adeosun, the other for the Pantamis. So erratic in words & action so much anything detrimental to national peace is possible with them.”

Sodiq Tade tweeted: “Forgery is greater than terrorism. In order to justify Pantami’s past actions, the lousy Garba Shehu goofed. This is the new Nigeria where forgery pose a threat to National unity than terrorism.”

Vivian Umukoro argued: “How can forgery be greater than terrorism? Garba Shehu is the worst of them all. Thank goodness nobody can bribe can God.”

Femi Coker said: “Greater crime and smaller crime. This is coming from the spokesman of a president? Crime is a crime. These buhari followers are terrible.”

“Are we saying that if Kemi Adeosun is reinstated then this all goes away? We are talking about terrorism here. Bringing up Kemi Adeosun’s case is like watering down the issue.” Moses Mudiaga queried
