It is a sad day for the country as another Nigerian doctor died passed away. Rev Sister (Dr) Kate Okpa, a member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Cross River state branch has died from COVID-19.
According to Daily Trust, the chairman of NMA Dr. Agam E. Ayuk noted that Dr. Okpa was from their Ogoja chapter.
Ayuk who disclosed this to journalists in Calabar said nine other doctors and medical personnel as a result of the deadly virus are on the danger list.
He said: “Currently, we have nine members who are infected with COVID-19. We lost a member in Ogoja, Rev Sister (Dr) Kate Okpa to COVID-19. It is something that is serious”.
The chairman of NMA went on to lament over the poor reportage of coronavirus in the state compared with its potency and intensity.
“The National Response Team has been around for almost two weeks now but the challenge we have in the state is that positive cases of COVID-19 are under-reported and the government is not helping out,” he added.
The state government expressed unhappiness at the response attitude of the Nigerian government in assisting with the fight against the pandemic.
Dr. Betta Edu, the state commissioner for health while briefing journalists on Friday, May 29, said that since the last visit of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) nothing has come out of it after they made a lot of promises.
In a related development, Matthew Adeyeri, a former chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ondo state, has died from COVID-19 complications.
The chairman of a famous hospital in Akure, the capital of the state, Ikubese Thomas-Wilson, urged Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to urgently meet with the state chapter of NMA in order to bring the striking doctors back to work.
Adeyeri was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, on Wednesday, July 8, after he was suspected to have contracted the virus.
