– Senator Sani Yerima said President Buhari never supported of the imposition of a governorship candidate for the 2019 election by ex-governor Abdulaziz Yari
– The former governor said he met President Buhari before the election
– According to Yerima, the president also expressed reservations over the imposition of candidates for the party during elections
A former governor of Zamfara state, Sani Yerima, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari was never in support of the imposition of a governorship candidate for the 2019 election by ex-governor Abdulaziz Yari.
Yerima said it was due to the planned imposition of the Zamafar state candidate for the All Progressives Congress that the party lost the election at the last poll.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Nigeria’s Pride FM in Gusau, Zamfara Yerima said he met President Buhari before the election.
He said the president also expressed reservations over the imposition of candidates for the party during elections.
He said: “We heard what your governor was doing and we are disapproving of his plan to impose candidates because the position at the party level is that primaries should be conducted to ensure level playing ground for all candidates.”
According to Yerima, shortly after his meeting with the president, the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole called him and said he was working towards making sure that Yari’s plan to impose a Zamfara state governorship candidate on the party does not work.
He said Oshiomhole told him that Yari’s plan will never be accepted.
“I then told Oshiomhole that he should not worry, that I will talk to Governor Yari. I then met and told Yari what Oshiomhole told me, but he said the national chairman of the party could not stop him. I told him that Oshiomhole was not alone in opposing the idea. I said President Buhari was also disapproving of it,” Yerima said.
Yerima said that when he spoke to Yari over the issue, he begged him not to involve the president in the matter.
He said the president had no hands in all the crisis but Oshimhole and that the national chairman was going to make sure that he did as he wished concerning a proposed candidate for the Zamfara governorship election then.
Yerima said: “I said okay no problem I then left. I was very careful not to quarrel with him as I did with my ex-deputy. Since he said I should back down, I retraced my steps in the affair but whenever there was any activity concerning the party I would go if invited.”
He added that when President Buhari came for the campaign in Gusau, he said would not raise the hands of any candidate and he bluntly told the stakeholders his stand.
“I then drew the attention of Governor Yari to what Buhari said during the stakeholders’ meeting when he arrived Gusau for his campaign rally. I told him if he had allowed me to explain what President Buhari said all the crises wouldn’t have happened,” Yerima noted.
Also, Yerima has said he would not contest for any position at the state level again, but that people, especially his allies, have started urging him to contest for the presidency.
Yerima said some Mallams across the country are already working to actualise his plan.
